Kuching...part 3

A Walk to Remember

Today after breakfast, hubs and me sempat shopping kajap at Sarawak Plaza again. That afternoon after lunch we decided to be our own tour guide. We were goin on a heritage walk. I had taken some tourist info leaflet at the airport masa awal2 sampai in Kuching and we were going to visit as many historical places as possible. Ala tempatnya pun dekat2 ja..around the city centre so it was just a walking distance. First place was the Tua Pek Kong Temple, the oldest temple in Kuching.

Beautifully carved and colorful dragons surrounds the temple

Chinese History Museum

Situated on the right side across Tua Pek Kong Temple, the building itself was built in 1912 and was originally a courthouse for Sarawak's Chinese community. U can't really miss the pink color.

ani kat Jalan Main Bazaar where u can find souvenirs of all sorts. We didn't enter every shop cos most of them sama jua brg2 yg durang jual. It's just different in price, if pandai cari u might get a bargain.

Background is the new complex of Dewan Undangan Negeri Sarawak (DUN) or State Legislative Assembly building, situated opposite Kuching Waterfront.

Abit of history: DUN is the oldest State Legislative in Malaysia. It was formed by Rajah Muda Charles Brooke following orders by the Rajah James Brooke, through a meeting held in a small fishermen village in Bintulu, Sarawak on 8 September 1867. (info from Google)

Moving on..this is the Kuching Waterfront. Sort of like our Damuan here. There's lots of people just strolling along the river esp tourists like us. Ada jua yg bawa family and just sitting on the benches provided enjoying the river view.

Astana is the official residence of the Governor of Sarawak, also called the Yang Di-Pertua Negeri. The Astana, which means "palace" in the local dialect, was originally built in 1870 as a bridal gift for the Ranee Margaret by Charles Brooke, the second White Rajah of Sarawak.

The Square Tower

The Square Tower is a heritage structure on the Kuching Waterfront. It was built in 1879 as a prison and was later converted into a fortress and then a dance hall..though it does seem a bit small to me to be a dance hall..hehe..Today it serves mainly for tourism. It is now fitted with a multimedia information centre, complete with a theatre for video presentations.

Charles Brooke Memorial & Old Court House

Located across the road from the Square Tower is the Charles Brooke Memorial and the Old Court House. The Old Court House was built in 1871 as the seat of Sarawak's government. The colonial-baroque Clock Tower was later added in 1883.

Next we go to Jalan India. Sort of like Masjid India in KL. Really love this place cos no cars are allowed along this street so it makes shopping peaceful..hehe..

Kuching General Post office building is another historical landmark of the city. Built in 1931, this attractive building stands in the middle of the city of Kuching. Pic taken from infront of the Craft Council.

Carpenter Street

Situated opposite the Old Court House compound. Otherwise, it is also across from the Craft Council. This Kuching Chinatown is marked with a grandiose Chinese-inspired red archway that certainly indicates the entry point of this popular shopping and eating place. Most of the shops along Carpenter Street sells mostly non-touristy stuff. Hence you will find bicycle shops, book stores, hardware stores, antique furniture stores and quaint coffee shops (locally known as kopitiam) where you can witness the city dwellers go about their daily life. It was almost 6pm when we walked thru this street and most of the shops have already closed.

Time to go back to the hotel after a day's heritage walk. Background is a full view of the Tua Pek Kong temple.

The white building is called Fort Margherita, named after Charles Brooke's wife, Ranee Margaret. It was built in 1879 to guard Kuching’s river approaches from pirates.

After a day's heritage walk, it's time to go back to our hotel. Kami lalu along the waterfront again..atleast ada jua kan di liat along the way..

That night we went to eat at the stalls at the Waterfront. ani mcm gerai2 at Kianggeh. Very peaceful and the night view of the Waterfront was amazing. But unfortunately, tengah syok2 makan tu, hujan turun dgn lebatnya. So we had to wait till taduh sikit then barutah we walked back to our hotel which was 2 blocks away. Luckily I bought an umbrella on the first day we arrived in Kuching...hmm..berguna jua bah ah..hehe

esok dah nak balik dah..sigh..
